Summer teacher institutes have profoundly transformed my thinking and teaching. They were the highlights of my career as an elementary school librarian. These experiences expanded my knowledge by studying with scholars and collaborating with exceptional teachers from around the country. Many institutes take place at historic sites such as the homes of presidents or in remote locations such as Heart Mountain, a Japanese incarceration camp during WWII in Cody, Wyoming. All renewed my enthusiasm for teaching and learning. Most are free. These are definitely opportunities not to be missed. Another bonus is creating lifelong friendships with amazing educators that you may meet again perhaps at another summer teacher program or at a national conference. Last summer I attended the “History of Immigration” seminar through Founding Forward. This topic, studied in the 3rd grade, remains critical today and touches many of our students. The presentations prepared us to experience Ellis Island, the Statue of Liberty, and the Tenement Museum in deeply moving and meaningful ways. For me, these were all places I have never explored. Going with a group of teachers through an educational program provides a lasting impact beyond a typical visitor’s tour. I am forever grateful for these experiences.
Before the pandemic I had the opportunity to participate in the Founding Forward “Civil Rights Traveling Workshop.” This was a bus trip from Atlanta, GA (MLK sites), to Birmingham & Selma. AL, Memphis, TN, and Little Rock, AR. Touring the historic sites and museums along this route continue to both haunt and inspire me. I am haunted by the brutality of the struggle for equal rights and the reality that this long journey is not over. Yet, I am also inspired by those who dedicated their lives seeking justice for all.
Attending a summer teacher institute has a ripple effect. You will return to your school excited to share your experiences with your students often with new lessons created during your program. Also, your enthusiasm to spread the word about these opportunities to your colleagues is contagious. They will want to join you on your next learning adventure!
