2009 State Senator Nancy J. King
(District 39, Montgomery County)

Senator Nancy J. King has been a strong advocate for education, first as a member of the Montgomery County Board of Education, representing District 1, where she served in the offices of president, vice president and as a member of various committees -- and then as a member of the Maryland House of Delegates where she served as the Deputy Minority Whip and on the Ways and Means Committee. In her capacity in the House, Sen. King served on the Children and Youth subcommittee and as a chair of the Education subcommittee.  A Member of the State Senate since September 5, 2007, she currently serves on the Budget and Taxation Committee, the Joint Committee on Administrative, Executive and Legislative Review, and is the Senate Chair for  the Joint Committee on Children, Youth, and Families.

Senator King has been recognized for her contributions to library media centers across the State of Maryland by supporting the MDK12 Digital Library Project.  In her support for the project, she recognized that by providing a cost effective means for purchasing high quality digital content, equitable access is provided for all students. Over the course of the project’s seven years, school systems have saved more than $600,000, and with these cost savings, some school systems have been able to purchase more -- and a broader range of digital content that support a wider-range of learning needs -- and some school systems were able to purchase digital content and provide access to students and their teachers for the first time.

By being a participant in the first “Access for Success: Digital Library Summit” and, later, with her introduction and the resultant passage of SB 235 - MDK12 Digital Library, Senator King has demonstrated a commitment to the project and to its sustainability. Because of her efforts, school libraries will continue to be the hub of learning in schools by providing these valuable 21st century resources to students, teachers, and staff.
